Find out how to calculate a specific GPA (grade point average).
Facts about GPAs:
- Your cumulative GPA automatically appears on your academic history.
- If you repeat a class, only your cumulative GPA will be adjusted to reflect the repeated class.
- To calculate a specific GPA (e.g., your major or minor GPA), follow the steps below.
1. Identify the classes to include in your calculation.
- Review your academic history.
- Note the classes you want to include to figure out a specific GPA, e.g., a GPA for your minor or major.
- Set your calculator to allow 3 digits past the decimal point, with no rounding of results.
Read the Academic Senate policy on grades and grade points.
2. Assign points to each grade for the included classes.
- Refer to the following chart:A+ = 4.0A = 4.0A– = 3.7B+ = 3.3B = 3.0B– = 2.7C+ = 2.3C = 2.0C– = 1.7D = 1.0F = 0
- For each class, multiply the grade points by the number of units.
Graduate students: Assign points only to grades for classes you've taken while in graduate standing.
3. Calculate your GPA.
- Add the grade points you identified in Step 1b above.
- Divide the total number of grade points by the total number of units.
- The result is your GPA.
